Copper(II) Phthalocyanine

Copper(II) Phthalocyanine

Superior Tinting Strength and Vivid Color:Phthalocyanine copper possesses extremely high tinting strength and saturation, presenting a pure and vibrant blue hue. Its tinting strength is significantly higher than traditional inorganic blue pigments; a small amount is sufficient to impart a bright, full blue appearance to products.

Excellent Light and Weather Resistance:Phthalocyanine copper exhibits excellent lightfastness and weather resistance, maintaining color stability and preventing fading under prolonged sunlight and outdoor exposure. Its lightfastness ranks among the best of organic pigments, making it the preferred blue pigment for coatings and plastics products requiring high outdoor durability.

Excellent Thermal Stability:Phthalocyanine copper exhibits excellent thermal stability, remaining undecomposed above 500°C. It maintains color stability during high-temperature processes such as plastic processing and coating baking, withstanding processing temperatures above 260°C without discoloration. This characteristic gives it a significant advantage in high-temperature engineering plastics and automotive coatings.

Excellent Chemical Resistance: Phthalocyanine copper exhibits excellent resistance to acids, alkalis (except concentrated nitric acid), organic solvents, and chemicals. It also demonstrates excellent migration resistance, preventing color bleeding or migration in plastics and coatings. High chemical inertness, maintaining stability in complex chemical environments.

Polymorphic tunability: Copper phthalocyanine exists in multiple crystal forms, including α-type and β-type. α-type copper phthalocyanine exhibits a reddish-blue hue, while β-type exhibits a greenish-blue hue. Different crystal forms can be selected according to application requirements, achieving precise control over the hue.

Product Description

Copper(II) phthalocyanine Product Description CAS#147-14-8

Copper(II) phthalocyanine, also known as phthalocyanine blue, pigment blue 15, C.I. 74160, has the chemical name (29H,31H-phthalocyanocyano(2-)-N29,N30,N31,N32) copper, with the molecular formula C₃₂H₁₆CuN₈ and a molecular weight of 576.07. Copper(II) phthalocyanine is a deep blue crystalline powder with a highly conjugated planar macrocyclic structure, formed by the coordination of divalent copper ions with phthalocyanine macrocycles. Its melting point is approximately 600°C, exhibiting excellent thermal stability; it does not decompose above 500°C. Regarding solubility, copper(II) phthalocyanine is insoluble in water, ethanol, and most organic solvents, but soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid and chlorosulfonic acid. Copper(II) phthalocyanine exists in two main crystal forms, α and β, with the β form exhibiting superior thermodynamic stability. Industrially, copper phthalocyanine is mainly synthesized via the phthalic anhydride-urea method (solvent method) or the phthalonitrile method. Taking the solvent method as an example, phthalic anhydride, urea, and cuprous chloride are used as raw materials, and a crude product is obtained through a condensation reaction in trichlorobenzene solvent. This crude product is then purified by dissolving in concentrated sulfuric acid, neutralized, washed with water, dried, and ground into powder to obtain the final product. Copper phthalocyanine is the core matrix of phthalocyanine pigments and the basic compound of the Pigment Blue 15 series. It possesses bright and pure color, strong tinting strength, high chemical inertness, and excellent lightfastness, heat resistance, and chemical resistance, making it one of the world's largest-produced and most widely used organic pigments.

Copper Phthalocyanine Product Applications CAS#147-14-8

Copper phthalocyanine is an important organic pigment and functional material, widely used in pigment industry, electronic materials, catalysts, and functional materials.

In the pigment industry, copper phthalocyanine is a core raw material for the production of blue and green organic pigments, mainly used in the manufacture of Pigment Blue 15 (including commercial formulations such as 15:0, 15:1, 15:2, 15:3, and 15:4) and Pigment Green 7. As a colorant, copper phthalocyanine is widely used in the coloring of coatings, inks, plastics, rubber, enamel, linoleum, and stationery. In the printing ink field, it is particularly suitable for offset printing and water-based flexographic printing, exhibiting excellent color performance; in industrial coatings, it is suitable for interior decorative paints, latex paints, and general industrial topcoats. In the plastics and rubber industry, copper phthalocyanine is used for the coloring of engineering plastics such as polyamides and polycarbonates, as well as rubber products. Its excellent migration resistance and lightfastness make it outstanding in high-temperature processing applications.

In the field of electronic and optoelectronic materials, copper phthalocyanine, as a p-type organic semiconductor material, possesses excellent charge transport characteristics. It can be used as a hole injection layer or electron blocking layer in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to improve device efficiency and stability; it can also be used as an electron donor material in organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs); and it can be used for performance research in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). In electronic paper display technology, copper phthalocyanine can be used to prepare blue electrophoretic particles.
