Iron Oxide Black

Iron Oxide Black

Excellent Tinting Strength and Opacity: Iron oxide black possesses extremely high tinting strength and opacity, effectively covering the substrate and presenting a rich, pure black tone. It performs exceptionally well in applications requiring high opacity and deep tones, such as automotive coatings and building materials.

Superior Light and Weather Resistance: Iron oxide black exhibits excellent light and weather resistance, maintaining stable color under various environmental conditions without fading or deterioration. It is resistant to alkalis, water penetration, and oil penetration, but not acid-resistant, dissolving in hot strong acids.

Good Dispersibility and Processing Performance: Iron oxide black has good wetting, dispersibility, and suspension properties, with uniform particle size, making it easy to disperse in coatings, inks, plastics, and other substrates, and offering excellent processing performance.

Chemical Stability and Safety: Iron oxide black is chemically stable, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly, making it a preferred alternative to carbon black in applications requiring low conductivity. It exhibits excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, and chemicals.

Product Description

Iron Oxide Black Product Description CAS#1317-61-9 / 12227-89-3

Iron Oxide Black, also known as Fe₃O₄, magnetic iron oxide, C.I. Pigment Black 11 (77499), has the chemical name Fe₃O₄ and a molecular weight of 231.53. It is a mixed-valence iron oxide, containing both Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ in its molecule, and can be represented as FeO·Fe₂O₃. It belongs to the inverse spinel cubic crystal system. At room temperature, it is a black or dark reddish-black powder. Its melting point is 1538°C, and its density is 4.8–5.1 g/mL (25°C). Regarding solubility, iron oxide black is insoluble in water, alcohol, and organic solvents, but soluble in hot concentrated inorganic acids. Iron oxide exists naturally as magnetite, and commercial products are mainly produced using synthetic precipitation methods, including the Laux process, aniline process, and co-precipitation process. Iron oxide black is the only combined iron oxide with ferrimagnetism. This unique property, along with its excellent chemical stability and environmental friendliness, makes it widely applicable in various fields such as pigments, magnetic materials, building materials, coatings, plastics, rubber, inks, electronics, and cosmetics.

Iron Oxide Black Product Applications CAS#1317-61-9 / 12227-89-3

Iron oxide black is an important inorganic black pigment and functional material, widely used in coatings, building materials, plastics, inks, electronics, and daily chemicals industries.

In the coatings and paints industry, iron oxide black is an important coloring pigment, widely used in automotive coatings, industrial coatings, architectural coatings, wood coatings, powder coatings, anti-rust paints, and anti-rust primers. It can be used in water-based interior and exterior wall coatings, oil-based paints (including various primers and topcoats such as epoxy, alkyd, and amino), decorative paints, furniture paints, electrophoretic paints, and enamel paints.

In the building materials field, iron oxide black is widely used for coloring building materials such as colored cement, colored floor tiles, colored roof tiles, artificial marble, concrete products, paving bricks, roofing tiles, mortar, asphalt, and sports tracks.

In the plastics and rubber industry, iron oxide black is used as a colorant for thermosetting and thermoplastic plastics, as well as a coloring material for rubber products (such as inner tubes for automobiles, airplanes, and bicycles).
