Calcium Hypochlorite

Product Description

Calcium Hypochlorite Product Description CAS#7778-54-3

Calcium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleaching powder, high-grade bleaching powder, or bleaching agent, has the chemical formula Ca(ClO)₂ and a molecular weight of 142.98. It is commonly available as a white or off-white powder, granules, or tablets with a strong chlorine odor. Its relative density (water=1) is 2.35, and its melting point is 100°C (decomposes). In terms of solubility, calcium hypochlorite is soluble in water (21 g/100 mL, 25°C), releasing hypochlorous acid and chlorine gas during dissolution, resulting in an alkaline solution; it is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. Industrially, calcium hypochlorite is mainly produced through two processes: the calcium process (lime milk chlorination process) and the sodium process. The calcium process involves calcining limestone to produce quicklime, which is then slaked into hydrated lime and reacted with chlorine gas in a chlorination tower. Calcium hypochlorite is a highly effective chlorine-containing disinfectant and bleaching agent, with an available chlorine content typically ranging from 60% to 75%, and its bleaching ability is almost equivalent to that of pure chlorine. Its strong oxidizing properties, high-efficiency bactericidal ability, and excellent stability make it widely applicable in various fields such as water treatment, disinfection, bleaching, and chemical engineering.

Calcium hypochlorite product applications CAS#7778-54-3

Calcium hypochlorite is an important strong oxidant and multifunctional chemical, widely used in water treatment, disinfection, bleaching, and chemical industries. Products are available in various specifications, including industrial, water treatment, and food grades, with an effective chlorine content typically ranging from 60% to 75%.

In water treatment, calcium hypochlorite is widely used for disinfection of drinking water, swimming pool water, sewage, and industrial circulating water. It effectively kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, and algae in water. As a solid chlorine source, calcium hypochlorite is convenient to store and transport, making it an important alternative to sodium hypochlorite solution.

In disinfection, calcium hypochlorite is widely used for surface and air disinfection in hospitals, schools, and food processing plants. In agriculture and animal husbandry, it is used for soil disinfection, livestock housing disinfection, and seed treatment. In public health and epidemic prevention, it is used for environmental disinfection to cut off pathogen transmission routes.

In the bleaching industry, calcium hypochlorite is used for bleaching cotton, linen, and silk fabrics in the textile industry; for bleaching pulp in the paper industry; and for bleaching starch. In daily life, calcium hypochlorite is also used as an active ingredient in bathroom cleaners and laundry bleach.
